Interview with viral alternative singer-songwriter ameliarose

Born out of a desire to put her thoughts into the world about mental health, poet and songwriter ameliarose has embarked on her solo career as an independent musician at the tender age of 19. The singer went viral on TikTok with her rendition of Mother Mother song ‘Hayloft’, which has received over 100 000 views since going live on the platform.  She cites the likes of  Fiona Apple, Jeff Buckley, St. Vincent as highly influential to her craft and her latest single ‘NOSEDIVE’ pays homage to these influential sounds. ‘NOSEDIVE’ speaks on the transition phase of adolescence into adulthood. The lyrics cut deep as ameliarose elaborates on a relationship that wasn’t meant to be and the mental anguish as a result.

With a debut album on the way, we look forward to seeing what this emo queen has up her sleeve in the weeks to come. Until then we have this exclusive interview with her below.

Looking back, what were some of your earliest entries into music appreciation? And music production?

I learned how to produce/write music by studying how my father did it. He showed me really intricate music from a very young age, which gave me an immense appreciation for specific technicalities in production!

Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when putting music together?

I usually start my songwriting process by writing the poetry first. Most of my lyrics come to me really late at night, and I write them down, and then I play around with chords and melodies. I write my songs primarily on piano, but occasionally I’ll use a guitar to lock down some new chord changes.

What gets your creative juices flowing?

I am usually most inspired when I am under-slept haha, which is often!

As a musician, it becomes apparent that there is a huge difference between the art and the business. Is there anything about the music scene that you would personally change?

I wish social media wasn’t as important as it is for the music industry. I worry about younger kids growing up with absolutely perfect-looking role models online, when in reality, they’re using photoshop, Facetune, etc. I hope many artists will start focussing more on their writing than their online profiles, but I’m not sure society is headed in that direction.

Studio work and music creation or performing and interacting with a live audience, which do you prefer?

I prefer music creation over everything! I write as a coping mechanism for my mental health, and there’s nothing like the satisfactory feeling of completing a song and saying what’s been on your mind recently.

What is the most memorable response you have had to your music?

I’ve had a few people tell me how my music saved their life, which is a really mind-blowing thing to hear someone say to you, especially for such a small artist like myself. I remember I cried that night, thinking about how many times I’d thought about giving up on sharing my music publicly. But knowing how much it helps other people is what makes it all worth it in the end, no matter what.

What’s on your current playlist?

I’ve been listening to a lot of Bright Eyes recently! They’re a newer favourite of mine, but I absolutely adore all their work, specifically ‘Lover I Don’t Have to Love’

Breakdown the news for us: what can we expect from you in the near future?

I have my debut album coming out this fall! I am absolutely stoked. I’ve been working non-stop on making sure every detail of the album is poignant and perfect! It’ll feel great to finally have these songs out there in the world!
